In this episode of the Gnostic Warrior Radio Show and Podcast, I have the pleasure of interviewing scholar, professor, and author, Bruce Chilton. Bruce is a scholar of early Christianity and Judaism and is currently the Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Religion at Bard College. He is the author of several books such as Rabbi Jesus: An Intimate Biography, Abraham’s Curse: Child Sacrifice in the Legacies of the West and Visions of the Apocalypse.
In this podcast, Bruce discusses his book, Visions of the Apocalypse. He explains that John's Revelation throughout church history has led to countless diverse and divergent interpretations. Bruce says that in modern times, the interpretations have become more fatalistic as in the complete final destruction of the world.
He says that the series of visions by John were not meant to be taken as future events, disasters or the end of the world. Hence, the reason John had said at the end of his Revelation, "Nothing more is to be added and nothing is to be taken away." Bruce explains that the purpose of his visions are meant to ground people in the world of heaven such as when God is revealed on earth and Satan is bound
Bruce's goal is to give people strategies for understanding John's Revelation in a contemporary context.
