Darvin Graham is not a podcaster, though after speaking with him, you'd think he should be. An obsessive podcast listener and analyzer, he takes listening to the next level, and has the rare ability to speak eloquently about the things he listens to. He and I have been emailing since I tried writing about my week in podcast listening habits, and our talk covers the broad strokes of what we converse about: our ideal podcasting app, the community of podcasters and listeners, why we listen to podcasts so obsessively, and of course: the shows we recommend to others. This episode was a lot of fun for me, largely because Darvin came into with a lot of talking points he knew he wanted to cover, and we dive straight in. Yes, there are plenty of questions without answers, but I think that's okay. If there were answers to everything, nothing would be interesting. This is the start of a thing I would like to do regularly (and will do next week), where I mix up the "regular" format of the show by talking to podcast listeners about the things they love/hate about podcasts. The reason being that when we hear from both sides of the podcast, and really take in not only what it is to make a podcast, but how we can actively participate in making the medium a more meaningful experience for all parties, everyone wins. Audio Note: There is a really weird popping sound on Darvin's side of the audio towards the middle of the episode. I didn't notice it while we were recording, and spent a sleepless and unsuccessful night trying to fix it. This episode was wrought with technical difficulties, so I'm definitely going to have Darvin on again sometime to make up for it. If anyone has any helpful tips, please drop me a line. Show Notes: Darvin Graham can be reached (and would like to be reached!) on Twitter (http://twitter.com/darvingraham) The posts that I wrote about my podcast listening can be found here: http://tylerrr.com/2014/09/08/the-week-in-podcasts.html What got Darvin into radio & podcasting? This American Life. We talk about the Overcast podcast app (https://overcast.fm) which I tried using briefly and will try again soon. Great design, and it's not Apple (which is a good thing, in this case). Only problem was porting over my 40+ podcasts from the Podcasts app to Overcast. Other podcasting apps include: Downcast, Pocket Casts, Castro, Downcast, Instacast, and Stitcher. Try them and let me know how you like them!
