Not long after I moved to the cutover land, I discovered what to me was a mysterious road sign: "Old Military Road." I did some digging and found out a few interesting facts about this road which opened in 1861 and basically disappeared in 1871. I wrote a song about the romance of a road that still exists just out of reach, just out of sight, just underfoot. I took the opportunity to sit down with local historian Ken Martens, author of the book "The Perilous St. Croix River Valley," and he filled in a world of background. I think you'll be as fascinated as I was with this story of the hopes and dreams of early Minnesota. For more show notes, please visit http://www.deepnorthmn.com/tales-from-the-deep-north/
