The RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum features a collection of early RV’s – and one of the oldest of these is featured in this episode of History on Wheels. This is a 1915 Model T Ford with a 1916 Camper Box – sold for various runabout automobiles – that has a lot of functionality that would be at home on any campground today. Kitchen, bedroom, shower, and storage are all included. They were called “telescoping” vehicles and give new meaning to the phrase “nothing new under the sun”. Examples are also found on the road at Model-T rallies around the country.
The Model T was introduced in 1908, with a 20 horsepower engine that would more or less run on just about any liquid fuel – including mixtures of alcohol, gasoline, kerosene, and coal oil. Delivering about 20 miles per gallon, this first “flex-fuel” engine was well ahead of its time. Interestingly enough, prior to 1914, Model T’s were available in a range of colors – not just black.
