In 1852, Herman Melville published what would much later become his most famous work... Moby Dick, or The Whale. He based this work upon a real life horror story that he'd read about. Twenty years earlier, a whaling ship called The Essex had been attacked and sunk by a giant sperm whale. Alone and literally in the middle of the ocean many thousands of miles from civilisation, the crew had to do some questionable things just to stay alive.
