"Start with the tiny bits, they all make up the big bits in the end - Randolph Wise" The Litter Collective (TLC) is collective of environmental groups in Newcastle. As the name suggests, they collect litter, organise beach clean ups and also act as a chamber of commerce within the Newcastle Region. TLC treat the earth and its inhabitants with TLC (tender loving care). Their goal is to rid society of waste and pollution through positive action and by promoting alternatives. Melissa is a Guardian for Take 3 Newcastle, Amnesty International Australia Newcastle Volunteer and Founder / Humanitarian Entrepreneur of Corethics Consultancy. She believes in a two-pronged approach to lasting peace that is, promoting environmental justice and social justice as she strongly believes they rest interdependently in the bigger picture of global peace. Melissa holds a Bachelor of International Studies with majors in Global Politics and Peace and Languages (Indonesian). Her love for nature, culture and languages comes alive through her advocacy, education and creative endeavours. She hopes to inspire the innate love and respect we are all born with for environmental and human rights, to motivate those she meets, to empower them and their action toward change. Randolph has travelled extensively and now resides in Newcastle with his partner and two teenage children. He works for government as a project manager. Among his interests are sustainable design, environmental politics and practical solutions to climate change and pollution. We chat about: - Human behaviour towards public clean ups, conversations and demographics. - The importance of us all making small individual protests (i.e. towards the crazy small plastic soy sauce containers from the sushi place that look like little fish). - The way we can feel uncomfortable in public about standing up for what we believe in / doing things differently. - The proliferation of single use plastics wrapped around fruit in supermarkets. - Our out of control consumerism. Buy buy buy, waste waste waste. - The easiest things we can do to make change today. ...and much more. I hope you enjoy this episode with Melissa McCabe and Randolph Wild!
