Statement of Need

In light of the current opioid crisis, many states have put forward prescribing mandates and limits for opioids, but it is still important for physicians to have clinical practice guidelines. This does not mean that these guidelines should be a one size fits all approach; physicians should leave room to practice the art of medicine but have a starting point in which they think about the patient as a whole and have cognitive, system, and physical strategies. While the opioid epidemic requires more responsible prescribing, including limiting the amount of opioids used and exploring alternative treatments, clinicians should realize that there is a whole person attached to this and that having discussions with patients and knowing what other comorbidities need treatment is key to the best management of a patient’s pain.

In this CME Outfitters Snack on the management of acute pain in orthopedic treatment, expert faculty discuss dispelling myths about non-opioid treatment options, how patients’ lives are impacted by their pain and the management of this pain, and how lessons learned in orthopedic treatment can apply to other practice settings.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Upon evaluation of your current clinical workflow for opioid prescribing, incorporate two best practice strategies to optimize safe and competent prescribing and minimize potential for abuse and diversion.
  • Educate patients about their pain to optimize safe and effective, multimodal treatment plans.

The following learning objectives pertain only to those requesting CNE or CPE credit:

  • Describe two best practice strategies to optimize safe and competent prescribing and minimize the potential for abuse and diversion.
  • Educate patients about their pain to optimize safe and effective, multimodal treatment plans.
