Summary

For this latest episode of the Diary of an Arcade Employee Podcast we are trying something new – an attempt at a mini-episode that I’m calling a 1UP – allowing me to roll out a digest-sized episode on various video game subjects. Perhaps one week I might decide to talk about the career and legacy of game designer David Crane, the next I might want to discuss 1989’s Black Knight 2000 pinball table – or in the case of the show for this week it’s the Top Five Imagic games for the Atari 2600. While I have no firm running time set in mind for each episode I plan on aiming for the ten to fifteen minute mark. Although having said that I will admit that this episode clocks in just a little over 20 minutes long – when it comes to talking about the Top Five Imagic games – I guess I had more fond memories to share than I realized.

As I mention in the show itself, I hope you’ll bear with me in these first few 1UP podcasts – I’ll play around with the format as I go until I find something I’m comfortable with. In this show I was lucky enough to have access to the Retroist Vault’s XJ13 computer system… yes… it’s old, which is why it’s in the Vault. But it proved invaluable in letting us know which five games from Imagic made the cut – while I’m sure you’ll be able to guess a few of them yourself, some might surprise you.

With this first 1UP episode I briefly touch on what made Imagic stand out back in the day as a game developer. In addition I’ve made sure that you get the basic idea how the games on this list work and as well as those responsible for bringing them to life. As always I made sure to include some audio clips but I’ve done my best to keep them short and to the point – having said that though I did bring a bit of vintage audio fun to share too. I also managed to find a pretty incredible letter from Imagic to a fan of 1982’s Demon Attack, that can be located over on Atarimania!

If you have any suggestions for future games to cover or comments on
the show itself you may email them to me at VicSage@Retroist.com. You
can also contact me on Twitter and of course on Facebook. You can also keep up to date on what is going down at the Arkadia Retrocade by making sure to “Like” their Facebook Page. If you need a daily fix you can check out the Official Diary of an Arcade Employee Facebook Page too.
