Description

Friends, we have a new 1UP episode of the Diary of an Arcade Employee Podcast - this week I'm diving into 1982's Tron Deadly Discs!

Summary

On this 1UP episode of the Diary of an Arcade Employee Podcast I tackle a game near and dear to my heart, the 1982 tie-in for TRON for the Intellivision – Tron Deadly Discs! As I mention briefly in the show itself – Tron Deadly Discs was actually one of three eventual games that was based off that fantastic film and even the Atar 2600 received a port of Deadly Discs as well as The Adventures of Tron. But if I had to pick one of my favorite Intellivision games of all time – it would definitely be Deadly Discs, just for the ability to make me feel like I was TRON himself – taking on the MCP one Warrior at a time!

As usual in this episode I give a rundown of the gameplay itself but I share my own memories of when I originally played this title. I also made sure to talk a bit about those creators who were responsible for bringing Tron Deadly Discs to market and what legacy they left behind. If you’ve had the pleasure of playing the game for yourself you know there is something odd about the coloring of characters in the title – you know – in the game TRON is colored red with the MCP Warriors being blue hued. Considering that the creators were given production artwork and photos from the film itself and that the box art got it right… where was the miscommunication?

Just in case you haven’t played the game yourself – the goal for Tron Deadly Discs is for a Player to keep Tron alive – trapped in gladiatorial arena on the Game Grid. Using Tron’s identity disc you hurl it at your three opponents – if it strikes them they are de-rezzed. Of course you can be sure the MCP Warriors are going to be attempting to do the very same thing to you – but as one of the few programs who still believes in the Users you must fight on wave after wave… even against the dreaded Recognizers!

I hope you will continue to enjoy these 1UP episodes of the Diary of an Arcade Employee podcast – now let me tell you why I think that Tron Deadly Discs is such a great game. Thanks as well for taking the time out of your busy schedule to listen to the show!
