Mike Hawthorne is a fantastic visual artist who came to writing later in life with his book The Hungry Horizon. It's historical fiction about the pirate Bartholomew Sharpe who sailed with Henry Morgan before going his own way. Born in Manchester in 1954, well traveled and self taught, Mike Hawthorne has made his reputation in London since 1975 with exhibitions of rock, reggae, and jazz visuals, underground comix and work acquired by the Museum of London and Lembeth Archives. The first nine years of his life were spent in Nigeria and Sierra Leone. His early influences were MAD magazines, illustrations of the American Civil War and television newsreels of Biafra and Vietnam. His paintings also draw on European medieval traditions of depicting heaven and hell. Since 1975 Hawthorne has worked in London, creating rock, reggae and jazz visuals and underground 'comix'.
