Friends, for this latest Diary of an Arcade Employee podcast - the subject is 1981's Donkey Kong!
For this latest episode of the Diary of an Arcade Employee Podcast we have a giant of a game – Donkey Kong – released to arcades back in 1981 by Nintendo. This show was a little different because there is such an odd and curious history with the origin of Donkey Kong – such as who actually made the legendary game as well as which company actually owned the rights to it’s source code. Plus this is the first podcast where I have tackled a classic arcade title that can only be described as legendary – that title also applies to one of it’s designers – none other than Shigeru Miyamoto. That name probably stands out, right? I mean, it’s only the man who helped bring us Super Mario Bros. and a little title known as The Legend of Zelda! Before all of that though he was wowing arcade goers with an epic adventure involving an giant ape, a damsel in distress as well as a brave carpenter… all brought together on a construction site!
Jump, man!
For this episode featuring Donkey Kong I have brought along the usual vintage audio treats and touch upon the basics of the game play. In addition since this game was such an absolutely huge hit – I touch upon a few of the many ways that Nintendo licensed the game, like with the Milton Bradley board game!
This was definitely a hard episode to put together as unlike some of the subjects of the other Diary of an Arcade Employee podcasts – the information on Donkey Kong is almost endless.
I hope that you will enjoy the Donkey Kong episode of the Diary podcast and as always I want to thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to listen to the show.
