Introduction: What happens when I die? There are only a few options. Here they are:
Option #1-There is no eternity so we only go to the grave.
Option #2-Reincarnation.
Option #3-Some type of heaven by our religious efforts or some type of punishment for those who are lacking in good deeds.
Option #4-Universalism.
Option #5-Purgatory.
Option #6-Heaven for those who receive the grace of God by trusting Jesus and hell for those who reject God.
Here are some truths that are very important. In fact, our response to them will determine our eternal destiny.
1. Our eternal destiny is not determined by our external earthly condition (v. 19-23). Our eternal destiny is determined by the condition of our heart and not any external factor (see v. 13-15).
2. Our eternal destiny is a place of continual, conscious existence (v. 23-25). We are not annihilated after death. We do not just go back to the dust because we are more than physical beings. We are not in some type of soul sleep either.
3. Our eternal destiny is a fixed state (v. 26). There are no second chances. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
4. Our eternal destiny is either heaven or hell (v. 23-25). There is no purgatory. The teaching of Jesus certainly does not allow for the doctrine of universalism, which says that everyone will be saved.
A. Hell is:
-A place of physical suffering (v. 23-24).
-A place of continual awareness of blessings and opportunities lost (v. 23, 25).
-A place of separation from the presence of God (v. 26).
B. Heaven is:
-Paradise (see Revelation 21-22)
-The abode of the saints of God (v. 22ff.)
-A place of comfort (v. 25)
5. Our eternal destiny is determined by our response to the Word of God (v. 27-31). In John 5:46-47, Jesus said, “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe h
