Welcome to Episode #4!

Update from Malori: really enjoying her break from nursing school since next semester she’ll be in school full-time. Big project last week was purging her clothes closet! Based on The Magic Art of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Diane says she doesn’t even own a lot of clothes. Perfect excuse to go shopping for classic staples! She also started going back to Crossfit – topic for another day!

Update from Diane: hosted bridal shower for son, Jordan, and daughter-in-law-to-be, Sydni. Also had some tearful moments, especially when Jordan played the song “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts that he picked for their mother-son dance at the upcoming wedding.

“Health in the News” Topic
What exactly is Paleo? Malori hates calling it a “diet” because it’s more of a template and way of life. Found Paleo in January 2012, started off just going gluten-free. Basic concept of Paleo is: NUTRIENT-DENSITY. In the mainstream world, the misconception about Paleo is that it is all about meat, protein and being low or no-carb. Also, some in the Paleo community demonize carbs – but ALL macronutrients (carbs, fats, and proteins) are necessary! Malori goes on a rant. Diane says that in a way it’s too bad it was labeled “Paleo” because of what it conjures up: eat like cavemen??

Our Paleolithic ancestors actually may have eaten grains earlier than we had thought: http://theplate.nationalgeographic.com/2015/09/11/ancient-oat-discovery-may-poke-more-holes-in-paleo-diet/ (Caveat: I don’t buy into the title of this article that this “pokes holes” in Paleo.  It just means that we modify what it means.)

Suggestion: start off with strict Paleo template for 30 days, then start adding back in foods. Don’t treat it like a dogma; customize according to your needs. Check out Chris Kresser’s work for more information on this: http://amzn.to/25f1uKR

Check out Malori’s two blog posts about Paleo:

The Paleo lifestyle includes exercise (and not just working out – functional movement too), sleep (how much and quality), toxin reduction, being in nature, and stress management. Even if Malori is eating the perfect diet, if she’s not sleeping or is really stressed out, it doesn’t matter.

“Just Do This” Easy Recipe
Idea for breakfast when you start eating Paleo: Malori likes to keep it simple and center it around protein.

– Saute greens (like kale, mustard greens, spinach) in coconut oil
– Clean meat (turkey or pork sausage, leftover meat from dinner the night before – meat is already cooked)
– Berries

This is SO easy! Takes about 5 minutes, less time to make oatmeal on the stove!

“What’s Growing in Your Garden?”
Diane and George got big, store-bought-looking carrots from their garden for the first time! However, the potatoes aren’t doing very well because it’s been too wet. You never know what’s going to do well with gardening from year to year! Malori’s bok choy got attacked by something.

Tangent of childhood story about Malori.

“Oil in the Family” – Essential Oil of the Day
Frankincense: known as the King of Oils. If you don’t know what oil to choose for a problem, just choose frankincense! It can help pretty much anything. It’s an extremely precious oil with lots of history behind it. In ancient times it was used for salves, soothing the skin, religious ceremonies.

Burning frankincense resin can be beneficial for health: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080520110415.htm

Frankincense can help rejuvenate the skin, reduce the appearance of imperfections and the look of aging. Supports healthy cellular function and apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Use frankincense aromatically, topically, and internally: inhale from your hands or put in a diffuser, put in a capsule or under your tongue daily for healthy immune function, put into facial moisturizer for more skin elasticity, put a drop onto nails to strengthen them.

We use a frankincense that is a combination of Boswellia carterii, frereana, and sacra. If you want more information on the specific brand that we use, give us a holler! podcast@thebackyardfence.org

“Diffuser Dreams” Recipe
Frankincense, white fir, and sandalwood for a grounding blend. All tree oils are generally very grounding and have a calming, woodsy fragrance.
