Whitfield explains the discovery of the algorithm, his relationships to copyright and patent law, the birth of the public-key cryptography community. Whitfield proceeds to discuss current challenges in the area of network security, trust management and privacy problems. He goes forward to explain his view on the history and meaning of the word "hack". He also explains what kind of encryption he uses for personal communication, how encryption should be handled and what the future has in store for cryptographic research.
