Wilderness Search and Rescue educator, Moose Mutlow, joins the Disaster Podcast team for this week’s episode. Just the beginning of his bio at MooseMutlow.com says:
Moose has over 30 years of traditional and alternative education experience around the globe. He has course directed 58-day Outward Bound instructor trainings in Appalachia, been a deputy headmaster in the Kalahari Desert, managed a beach concession on the Mediterranean, slogged through Australian rain forests with middle school students, juggled as a street performer in too many cities to mention, has more then 2000 days of field instruction in a wilderness setting, and most recently spent four months as the Interim Head for an elite ski academy.
Moose talks about the importance of having Family Liaison Officer (FLO) training within your organization. This person can interact with family members during an active incident and response so that they can receive the benefits of:
* Clear communication
* Reduces potential conflict and distractions
* Insulates rescue teams and incident command
* Builds the initial foundation for trust and respect during and post-accident.
Moose also has a book on the subject out and available. I urge you to look it up and grab a copy. When Accidents Happen: Managing Crisis Communication as a Family Liaison Officer is the perfect book to start learning more about how to become a FLO.
