This post is all about two! There are several words that are good to know in English that are associated with the number two. These words help you to express the concept of two without saying the number two. Let’s look at the words.

Pair

People use the word pair when they want to express two of something or two people together. Here are two examples:
1) I bought a new pair of shoes yesterday.
2) The children sat in pairs in the classroom.

Couple

The word couple is also used to describe two of something or people. However, you use it in a different way than the word pair. Again, here are two examples:
1) I need a couple of people to help me clean the house.
— It is incorrect to say, “I need a pair of people to help…”
2) I’ll see you in a couple of minutes.
— You would never say, “I’ll see you in a pair of minutes.”
I should point out that the word couple always means two, and should not be confused with the word few, which means more than two.

Double

Double is a nice English word that means two times. How about two examples? I’m glad you asked!
1) Double click on the icon to open the program.
2) My electric bill is almost double the amount that I paid last month.

Twice

The word twice means two times. And now it’s time for two examples.
1) It takes twice as long to get to my new job.
2) Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.

Este post es todo acerca de dos! Hay varias palabras que son buenas para saber en inglés que se asocian con el número dos. Estas palabras te ayudan a expresar el concepto de dos sin decir el número dos. Echemos un vistazo a las palabras.

Par – Pair

La gente usa pair cuando quiere expresar dos de algo o dos personas juntas. He aquí dos ejemplos:
1) Compré un nuevo par de zapatos ayer.
2) Los niños se sentaron en parejas en el aula.

Pareja – Couple

La palabra couple también se utiliza para describir dos de algo o personas. Sin embargo, se utiliza de una manera diferente que la palabra pair. Otra vez hay dos ejemplos:
1) Necesito un couple de personas para ayudarme a limpiar la casa.
— Es incorrecto decir, “Necesito un pair de personas para ayudarme a limpiar la casa.”
2) Nos vemos en un couple de minutos.
— Nunca dirías: “Te veré en un pair de minutos.”
Debo notar que la palabra couple siempre significa dos, y no debe confundirte con la palabra pocos (few), lo que significa más de dos.

Doble – Double

Double es una bonita palabra inglesa que significa dos veces. ¿Qué hay de dos ejemplos? ¡Me alegra que hayas preguntado!

2) Mi factura de electricidad es casi el doble de la cantidad que pagué el mes pasado.

Dos veces – Twice

La palabra twice significa dos veces. Y ahora es la hora de dos ejemplos.

2) Me engañas una vez, la culpa es tuya. Me engañas dos, la culpa es mía.
