What Will Be The New Facebook Marketing Trends In 2017?

When trying to predict the future, you’ve got to analyse the present. Where are we now & what are the current trends we’re seeing in the Facebook marketing space? Here are the trends of today that Jon thinks are likely to see further growth this year & beyond.

Facebook Video Marketing

Groundbreaking, I know, but video is still huge and Facebook wants it to be huge. They like what people like to engage with and people like to engage with video. They are putting a greater emphasis on it all the time, whether it’s live streaming or otherwise.

Facebook Ad Targeting

With constant improvements to Facebook’s Dynamic Ads, there are more ways than ever before to pinpoint niche audiences who are more likely to engage with your advertising and convert to leads.

Forget about placing an ad that targets 24-34yo mums who live in Sydney and work part time. In August last year, Facebook gave us an insight into how they specifically target ads to different people with 98 different data points coming into play.

So if your ideal customer is a trendy, environmentally-conscious mum in a long distance relationship who drives a Prius, watches Orange is the New Black, is a “heavy” buyer of wine and bought a competitor’s product last week, then you can find them!

Tracking Social Campaign Performance

The rise of offline conversion tracking is something that will really help small local businesses with brick-and-mortar stores to track their conversions and economise on their ad spend.

Online tracking with ad clicks and website visits is relatively easy to measure, but what about those customers who have seen your ad online and a week later decide to visit your store/business?

Like Google, Facebook has technology that pretty much knows where you are all the time (or at least where your phone is) and can track which stores and businesses you walk into.

Combining your GPS location with other data, marketers can now see how many of their in-store customers have been converted from seeing or engaging with a certain ad.

Optimisation of Facebook Campaigns

Using Facebook features like Locations and Store Visits, local businesses can optimise their ads to drive local customers into their store.

Errythang!

That’s right, anything and everything. Facebook have been and will continue to be always doing something to improve.

The amount of Facebook features that very few people have never heard of is incredible, because they are always testing and trying out new avenues to see what people like and respond to, without necessarily promoting them until they know it’s going to be a success.

*Dave’s Personal Prediction: Facebook Search

Something that Dave’s been really excited about lately is the possibility of improved Facebook search tools, which both he and Jon agree could take a massive chunk out of Google and other search applications like Yelp & Trip Advisor.

Creating A Marketing Funnel On Facebook

You might have heard of something called the marketing funnel. It’s basically an analogy that marketers use to refine an audience based on their engagement with a brand.

Top of the Funnel

Content, Facebook posts and advertising to attract people with very broad demo/psychographics. The audience you choose will be based on what Facebook has gleaned though their profile information, likes & engagement, in addition to other data collected from major data mining companies.

People who engage with your content here and don’t ignore it proceed to the middle of the funnel.

Middle of the Funnel

Refine the audience even further, separating potential buyers from the rest and nurturing those leads.

Bottom of the Funnel

Place your call to action ads within your new, refined audience who are more likely to generate leads and become customers.

You might be wondering, why not just begin at the bottom of the funnel? While beginning with product-focused ads may work for select businesses (for example, a local pizza restaurant), even those businesses can benefit from retargeting consumers who have visited a website, made a purchase or engaged with ads previously.

7 Facebook Tools & Features That Every Local Business Should Be Aware Of (if not already using)

Dynamic Adverts

Dynamic Ads has always been about re-marketing to people who have previously visited your website. If your website doesn’t get a lot of traffic however, Dynamic Ads has now been updated so you can target not only website visitors, but also those who have simply interacted with your content.

This new update is especially useful for smaller businesses trying to compete with the bigger players who can afford to drive a tonne of people to their whiz-bang websites.

Recommendations

One of the great things about Facebook is its ability to solve problems we didn’t even know we had, but once they’re solved we can’t live without the cure. Now there’s a smart way to call on your Facebook friends when you need advice regarding a good doctor/restaurant/hairdresser/tattoo removal expert (don’t ask).

Recommendations not only provides an all-in-one-place platform for you to share tips with your friends, but it also includes links and allows you to save, research and map out those recommendations.

Facebook Marketplace

While Facebook Marketplace acts like Gumtree or Craigslist in the way that it is technically just for C2C transactions, watch this space. Savvy small business marketers are already using this relatively new platform to increase sales, with the rest of the marketing world waiting with bated breath to see what Facebook has in store in terms of expanding the platform to allow for B2C selling.

Ads Preferences

After listening to the bit of this podcast when Jon said only about half of his ad preferences were actually relevant to him, I jumped straight into my own settings to check it out.

I was amazed at some of the incredibly inaccurate things that have been determining which ads I see on Facebook (When did I engage with the French Communist Party?) and proceeded to delete about 90% of it.

Offers

Facebook’s official coupon system is another way of encouraging those near the bottom of your funnel to go ahead an make a purchase.

Carousel Ads

Carousel format adverts are a great way to reduce your cost per conversion. Essentially they allow you to add up to 10 images on a horizontal scrolling carousel within your Facebook ad, allowing you to promote several products at once and create a more visually engaging ad.

Messenger Marketing

Creating and expanding audiences, improved messenger bots & direct sales without leaving the Messenger app are just a handful of reasons why marketing via Messenger is continuing to grow and why local businesses need to at least be aware of it.

How To Optimise Your Business’ Assets For Facebook

It’s really really simple: just be you (only shinier).

By understanding what your style is and what your audience responds to, you’ll find what works for you. Often marketers who haven’t found their voice yet will try to sound like somebody else, which can end up seeming fake and unconvincing.

“Facebook has said they know that people don’t like deceptive marketing and click bait, so it’s going to cost more and more to run those ads.”

Once you’ve got a solid brand image and tone of voice, make sure it’s clear as a bell and up-to-date across every one of your platforms.

With just a little bit of regular upkeep on your Facebook page, website, Google profile, etc. you can give your business’ ads and assets the best chance of being seen by the right people, i.e. those trendy, environmentally-conscious mums in long distance relationships who drive Prius’, watch Orange is the New Black and buy a lot of wine.
