We know that sitting has been dubbed as the new smoking but is it true? If you are like a lot of us, sitting is a BIG part of your day. Between desk jobs, Netflix and other sources of entertainment, we have plenty of chances in our days to spend time sitting. Sitting has been linked to some negative heath outcomes Research has been coming out over the last couple of years talking about what happens to our health when we sit too much. Some of the negative health outcomes that have been linked to sitting include: All-cause mortality Some types of cancer Obesity Cardiovascular Disease Diabetes Depression But is that link direct? Can we say that if you sit too much, you're at more risk of diabetes? The answer to that question is a little bit more muddled and we don't really know. Sitting too much isn't the same thing as not exercising When we talk about how much we sit, we are referring to sedentary activity. When we talk about not exercising, we are talking about physical inactivity. These are two different things. Both can have negative health consequences. We wrote an article last year on the cost of inactivity (you can check it out here). Do you sit too much? What can you do about it? If you know that you spend too much time sitting? In the podcast, I mentioned an article that went over the newest research on sitting. Here is the link to it. Some ideas for you to incorporate more movement into your day are things like Exercise Drink Water Have a standing alarm Change your work station so that you have to walk different places Take a walk at lunch Bonus: standing desks!
